THE BATTLE FOR THE GREENS

My friends, In these early days of June, as the sun casts its long shadows across the greens of our beloved Somerset, the West Somerset Bowls League stands not merely as a contest of bowls, but as a testament to the endurance, the courage, and the unyielding spirit of our clubs and players.

Division One — The Unconquered Advance

At the summit of Division One stride two mighty forces: Burnham-on-Sea A and Williton A. These teams, undefeated and undaunted, march forward with the calm assurance of seasoned regiments. Burnham, steady and relentless; Williton, fierce and unbowed. They advance as if destiny itself were clearing the path before them.

Behind them, North Petherton A and Ilminster B fight with admirable resolve. Their victories are hard-won, their losses borne with dignity. They are the battalions that hold the line, refusing to yield an inch more than necessity demands.

Yet we must speak with solemn candour of Wellington A. Their campaign has been beset by misfortune. Though they fight with the courage of lions, the fates have not yet smiled upon them. Their position at the foot of the table is a burden they bear with stoic fortitude. Let no man doubt their spirit, for in adversity the true character of a club is revealed.

Division Two — The Rising Powers

In Division Two, the thunder of advancing armies can be heard from afar. Burnham-on-Sea B, with aggregates that shake the very earth, stand as a colossus astride the division. Wellington B, bold and brilliant, march beside them, their victories shining like beacons across the county.

Taunton B, steadfast and determined, remain close behind, ever ready to seize their moment.

But at the foot of the table, North Petherton C and Burnham C face trials as stern as any endured in this league. Their aggregates are grim, their fortunes bleak — yet we must never forget that even the darkest hour may herald the dawn.

A Final Word

Thus, as Week Four draws to its close, we find ourselves in the midst of a great campaign. Some clubs surge forward with irresistible momentum; others cling to hope with admirable tenacity. But all — every team, every player, every supporter — contribute to the noble tapestry of our sporting life.

Let us go forward, then, into Week Five with courage in our hearts, bowls in our hands, and the unshakeable belief that no deficit is insurmountable, no league table immutable, and no club beyond redemption.

For in Somerset, as in life, we shall never surrender.
